Reading the Barmen Declaration

Masaru Asaoka
Reading the Barmen Declaration Baruman Sengen o Yomu Masaru Asaoka 21 C Booklet #43. In 1934 representatives from German Lutheran, Reformed, and United churches met in the city of Barmen. They declared that giving an ultimate commitment to the state rather than God was idolatry. Christ is the only head of the Church. It expressly repudiated the claim by Nazi sympathizers that the “German prophet” Hitler and “racial consciousness” could be sources of God's revelation. The Church submits itself explicitly and radically to Holy Scripture as God's gracious Word. The statement became the basis for the minority Confessing Churches to resist the Nazi ideology in German churches. Although the stance of Japanese evangelicals is different from the neo-orthodox stance of some of the framers, what can Japanese Christians learn from this declaration?
