"Mack" Philips (Sam Worthington) took his three children on a family camping trip. The older girl and boy decided to take a last canoe ride before heading home. As their canoe overturned, and Mack went to rescue them, his back was turned and the unspeakable happened. Mack's youngest daughter, Missy, was abducted by a known child predator. After a massive search, evidence of Missy showed up at an abandoned shack. Although they never found her body, everyone knew the worst had happened. For the next four years "a great sadness" fell over Mack and his family, until a note from God showed up in his mailbox inviting him to come to the shack. He takes his friend's 4-wheel-drive truck and drives into the mountains to the shack and encounters the Trinity. God the Father is seen as a middle-aged African-American woman, called Papa (Mack's wife's favorite name for God) or Elousia (Victoria Spencer), who looks like a friendly, pie-baking neighbor from childhood (same actress). Jesus is seen as a Jewish carpenter with an Israeli accent (of course, right on). The Holy Spirit is seen as a Japanese woman with the Hindi word for wind, Sarayu, as a name. This succeeds well in getting past the stereotype that some people have of God as an old white American male who is vengeful and cruel. Mack always uses male forms in addressing and referring to the Trinity, and the entire experience is presented as part of Mack's thoughts while hospitalized and unconscious from an accident that occurred while driving to the shack. So some could say it is all in his mind, but then there is the physical typed note that showed up in his mailbox to account for. The story takes overwhelming heartache and portrays God’s healing power in our lives through encountering the Trinity. This is an imaginative way of showing God relates to us in love and forgiveness. Mack learns that God is with him in his pain and learns to trust God with Missy and even forgive his abusive father. 132 minutes.
